Boeing Research & Technology Europe S.L.U. (BR&T-Europe) is a wholly owned subsidiary European R&D center of The Boeing Company established in Madrid (Spain) in 2002. Boeing has 11 R&D centers in the United States, Brazil, Europe, Russia, India, China and Australia. BR&T-Europe was the first international BR&T center. BR&T-Europe’s headcount amounts to 54 employees from over 10 different European nationalities (50 of them holding Higher Education degrees).

BR&T-Europe has the specific mission of working with partners across Europe in research and technology development to foster innovation, excellence and competitiveness within the European R&D community. The business model is conceived around multi-partner, multi-national consortia within the European Union´s R&D legal framework.

The technical expertise of BR&T-Europe focuses on four key technology areas that are priorities for the European Union as well as for Boeing:

  • Airspace Operational Efficiency (Airspace and aircraft based innovative solutions for improved system efficiency in support of Boeing’s Air Traffic Management modernization efforts in Europe)

  • Model Based Engineering (Software models to reduce the cost and to improve the Safety of Boeing Commercial Airplanes products, services and operations)

  • Materials & Manufacturing (Next generation composite materials for faster and more efficient manufacturing processes and environmentally progressive advanced materials for commercial airplanes)

  • Fuel Cell Systems:

    BR&T-Europe has a long history of integrating fuel cells systems for propulsion of electric aircraft (manned and unmanned). Some of the main achievements are

  • 2008 – BR&T-Europe proved for the first time in aviation history the feasibility of a leveled manned flight with fuel cell power.

  • 2014 – BR&T-Europe demonstrated the feasibility of long endurance fuel cell-powered Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV) flights using compressed H2 gas sustainably produced in an off‑grid solar based hydrogen refueling system for UAVs, also designed and developed by BR&T-Europe. This refueling system guaranteed sustainable production onsite and non-disrupted operation in remote areas. More than 40 flight tests were conducted with the two fuel cell powered UAV prototypes designed and developed by BR&T-Europe in a wide range of altitudes and ambient conditions.

  • 2015 onwards – BR&T-Europe is maturing several H2 generation and storage technologies for application in vehicles with low volume and weight allowance and has extensively investigated chemical hydrides (NaBH4 and MgH2), alkaline metals (Na/Li in an inert atmosphere), high pressure and cryogenic H2 storage solutions.

  • 2015 – BR&T-Europe is developing the gas processing unit for a novel 50/120 kW reversible SOC energy storage system (600 kWh) under the GrInHy European project.
